Exeter, The Regional Capital
Exeter is one of the oldest cities in England, founded by the Romans almost 2000 years ago and was originally called 'Isca'. Many parts of the old wall, which was built by 200AD, can still be seen. This was built around Exeter to protect the city. City Wall guided walks are a good way to learn more. Exeter has may historic buildings well worth exploring - St Mary's Steps lead down to some beautiful Tudor buildings, the most famous being ‘The House That Moved'. Nearby is the Maritime Quay, one of the UK's best inland water resorts, with yet more lovely interesting buildings, cafés, restaurants and a cluster of antique and gift shops.
The ‘Underground Passages' are a unique monument, built to pipe water around the city in medieval times. Completed in the 14C, and one of the most famous of Exeter's landmarks, is the beautiful Cathedral church of St Peter. Cathedral yard itself is ideal for a lunch in one of the many restaurants or to relax on the green and watch the world go by.
But if you want to shop ‘till you drop, Exeter has over 750 shops, including many independents. From the Real McCoy, with a huge range of vintage clothing, to cobbled Gandy Street, with gift shops and wine bars, to the new Princesshay shopping centre, with top fashion shops, The Apple Store and one of Debenhams flagship stores, Exeter is fast becoming one of the finest shopping centres in the UK.
